At a debate about Russia’s origins at the Imperial Academy of Sciences and Arts in St. Petersburg in 1749, one member threatened to beat up his opponents with a walking stick. But in the end, he got the short end of the stick himself, and was demoted after a rival complained to the tsarina that his theories demeaned Russian statehood.
